National Council of People with Disabilities (NCPD) and Better Future Generation (BFG) joined the rest of the world to celebrate International Day of Person with disabilities. It was celebrated in Rwanda on 3rd December 2021 in Rubavu district. NCPD organized the disability awareness week to aware the community on issues facing persons with disabilities. In that week, many activities including inspection on Physical accessibilities by PWDs on building of higher learning institutions were conducted.
Four universities were visited: Global health Equity (UGHE), INES RUHENGERI, UR-CAVM and IPRC MUSANZE.
During the visit in these Universities some areas were inspected to see PWDS accessibility whereas: Infrastructures classroom, libraries, laboratories, Dormitories (sleeping rooms, Toilets and washing rooms), playing grounds, restaurants etc.…
NYIRABUGENIMANA SILYVIE, Field friendly Communication officer at NCPD highlights that the activity aims at collecting data on how the infrastructure helps the PWDs to access the services that are offered from campuses, creating awareness on construction of infrastructure that easy and enable PWDs to access and to advocate on challenges that are still existing to PWDs in Buildings and Physical accessibilities.
Dr. Fabien HAGENIMANA the vice chancellor of INES RUHENGERI point out the challenge that they still faced with. “Some of our infrastructure still have the gap that can’t enable the person with disabilities to access because were built in many years ago. As we are constructing the new building, we put in consideration the accessibly for all and we are renewing as much as possible to meet with international accessibility code” he said.
BFG promotes inclusion of youth, Women, Persons with disabilities and vulnerable people in socio-economic activities by enabling them to be self-employed and protection of their interests’
NCPD is a Governmental institution responsible for advocacy and social mobilization on disability issue with view to strengthening the capacity of person with disabilities and ensuring the participation in country development.
